melatonin - cycles
Melatonin is famous for its role in sleep, the keeper of our circadian rhythms. As an internal clock, it signals our brains to make us sleepy. Traveling across time zones can throw off this clock, causing jet lag. Some people find taking melatonin pills to be helpful to realign their internal clock with the new time, but some quality time out in the sun might do just as well.
Melatonin is produced when it is dark. It is suppressed by blue light, leading to the advice to keep screen-time to a minimum before bedtime. Melatonin not only keeps track of days, but of seasons, as well, prompting seasonal behaviors in a variety of animals.
Melatonin is also a powerful antioxidant, protecting our DNA from damage.
This necklace is based on the shape of the melatonin molecule. It is made from quality, solid sterling silver. The pendant is about 1.5 inches wide and hangs from a chain that can adjust between about 16-18 inches.
